Characterized by a series of constructions disposed in a circle around a courtyard, it tends to take form as an example of a typical medieval fortification erected in defence of a residing family.
The construction took place around 867 A.D, Winigi and his wife Richilda founded the Monastery, destined to give hospitality to 20 virgins dedicated to serving God and in 1003, the descendants of Winigi, Rodolfo and Bernardo, donated the Abbey to the order of the Camaldolite Monks. In 1153 Rinaldo I, son of Guido, had a home furnished with a "portico": that is the configuration of the actual modern day structure of the Monastery, with the circle of the wall open in the two doors and the Chapel settled within the walls of the Monastery.
A position of prestige that went unhindered even after a punitive expedition carried out by the Senese in 1231 against Guinisio "Lord of the Monastery", guilty of not obeying Senese authority. Inserted in the middle of an often-contested land, the Monastery was repeatedly the scene of wars between Siena and Florence. The Monastery underwent a particular heavy siege in 1208 on the part of Florence and Arezzo, during the war that preceded the battle of Montaperti in 1260, depicted in Dante Alighieri's celebrated verse " the ghastly and tremendous slaughter that turned the Arbia red".
In 1557 the entire Republic of Siena was absorbed in the territory dominated by Florence and the Monastery consequently followed its destiny. In the last decades this courtly and rural architectural gem underwent a sad state of deterioration and abandon. To bring it back to life, a recuperation project of the Monastery and surrounding rural building was instituted in order to improve its historical and traditional characteristics as well as restore its antique splendour to this testimony of centuries of history...
